| Great Girls Backpacker trips are based
on the idea that no woman should go backpacking alone unless she wants to.
Trips are organized with the idea that for the short time we are out there
we are creating our own little community and family. Trails are picked based on the leader's discretion. Since the majority of members live in the greater St. Louis area most trips are somewhere in Missouri, Illinois, or Arkansas. There is talk of going to Kentucky but that hasn't happened yet. Hiking in the mountains is always challenging and trails range in difficulty. Don't forget that mood, weather, and other factors besides just the lay of the land effect difficulty. Trips are generally limited to 6 people. Any more than that and it is difficult to assign food. The group can't be as intimate either. It's nice to all be able to sleep together in the same tent and eat together. Every person is assigned food to bring. No one is self-sufficient. This enhances the group feeling and cohesiveness. We are in this together and we make it or don't make it together! To get an idea of past trips, browse the photo gallery. Have a look at the most recent gear assignments. Take a look at the list of what each indiviual is responsible for. Individual gear is often available for loan. Don't not come because you are missing an item or two. Let us know. We will make sure you are covered! |
| Who are we? |
| Originally Eva and Rozzy just went backpacking together. They enjoyed being out in the woods
enough to wake up in the morning and still be there. They didn't mind having to carry their homes
on their backs like turtles. Then a friend of Eva's got wind of what they were doing and thought she might like to try it out. Sounded like hard work, but also like a lot of fun. Kathi recruited her daughter, Denise, and the four girls went out to explore the wilderness of Missouri. Another friend got wind of what was happening and she decided to come along on a trip too. It seemed maybe a group was forming of women who enjoyed pushing themselves just a little and getting a nice break from the city! Eva had been putting all the pictures from each trip on the web for everyone to see and coined "Great Girls" as a funny way to label them. It was really just a joke. Everyone seemed to like it though and started calling themselves that. The name stuck. Now we can safely call ourselves a troupe of sorts. If you live somewhere between Conway, Arkansas and St. Louis, Missouri maybe you would like to join us. If so, join the mailing list by clicking the link in the header above. Looking forward to seeing you on the trail! |
